The Journal of Applied Indigenous Research (Journal AIR) is an Indigenous-led, Non-Profit organization focused on the promotion, publication of, and access to, peer-reviewed research by indigenous Peoples, for Indigenous Peoples.

The Journal AIR was created in 2024 out of deep conversations about Education, Research, and Tribal communities in Sitka, Alaska at the 3rd Annual Leaders in Native Education Convening with Region 16 Comprehensive Center. The group of Native Education Leaders wished to acknowledge systemic barriers and concerns around Academic Publications – centering primarily on the need for the Peers in the Peer Review process to be centered in an Indigenous Paradigm and familiar with Tribal/Indigenous communities, colonial histories, and research in addition to the academic topic in order to accurately assess the research being presented.

We are the peers

This idea was the seed for the Journal of Applied Indigenous Research (Journal AIR). With the support of friends and peers, we are working to create this venue for Tribal and Indigenous Academics across the U.S. and the world to publish academically strong research from our communities that is Peer Reviewed by Tribal/Indigenous researchers.

Journal AIR supports Indigenous individuals, groups, communities, organizations and Tribal Nations in sharing their work through publication. We support research that follows community protocols, protects data sovereignty, and respects Indigenous ways of knowing.

We are taking a multi-layed approach to addressing the various barriers to publication and are working with Indigenous Researchers from around the U.S. to develop Journal AIR. Want to be part of our team? We’d love to chat with you! [email protected]

We have two publication avenues:

Quarterly Printed Journal

Our Quarterly publication is an Indigenous-based Peer-Reviewed Academic process that meets the needs of our Indigenous communities and exhibits academic excellence. Each quarter has a unique focus relevant to Indigenous communities and will have Indigenous Editors and Peer-Reviewers who specialize in those particular fields.

  • Quarter 1: Emergency Management and Response
  • Quarter 2: Health and Wellness
  • Quarter 3: Education
  • Quarter 4: Special Topics

Research Repository

Our Research Repository is designed to store and share research important to communities and Tribal Nations. The Weekly publication has a less formal publication process that is designed to provide a quick review by Indigenous academic peers in order to get the research published in a timely manner.
